My Imaginary Vacation

My Imaginary Vacation

When the 2020 pandemic descended on my small town, I had been practicing social distancing for many months. A family member going through chemotherapy already had educated me— and my household — on infection and hygiene.

I was now solely responsible for the errands, the cleaning, the cooking. While staying home felt safe and secure, it was also an exceptionally busy time. I no longer had the hours to make and process images with my camera.

I found a new abbreviated way to create. Each morning I sat at my dining table, and for about an hour, I made collages. I became completely absorbed in the process of creating an image using the simplest formal elements of color, shape and composition. My imagination took over, and my vision soared to new places where the pandemic did not exist. These collages represent a kind of psychic escapism during a time when escape was impossible.
